Tom Bushnell helped Me to understand myself

I've been a psychiatric nurse, I've studied NLP (Neuro-linguistic programming), T.A.(Transactional Analysis), counselling, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), CBT (Cognitive behavioral therapy) but none of these came close to helping me to understand myself... Tom Bushnell did.

How to navigate your way around the tricky 7th at Stoke ParK Golf Course, by using mental rehearsal

This is taken from the Club Membership Newsletter, which Tom Bushnell writes for each month, giving their Golfing members a Mental Edge on their game.

To put you in the picture Stoke Park Golf Club's signature hole is the 7th (12th at Augusta was modeled on it) It's a must hit green par 3.

On the left side there is a steep bank down to two bunkers which run the almost the full length of the green, which also slopes sharply from left to right. Right of the green is another steep bank down to several teardrop lakes. Short of the green is another lake. Back Tee 176 yards, Yellow Tee 150 and ladies tee 130.

Miss left and the next shot is in the water, miss right and your in the water. Hit the green and a three putts on the cards -

As you will see this is potentially a very tricky hole. Here are some mental tips that can be applied when tackling this hole.

........................................................................

Tiger Woods is quoted as saying that "90% of Golf is in the mind". We think in pictures. When thinking about a potentially tricky hole such as the 7th here at Stoke, take a few minutes to
rehearse visually in your mind how we are going to play it.

Try this: Get into a relaxed state, close your eyes if you want to start to vividly imagine yourself playing the perfect hole on the 7th. Breath deeply, stand tall, shoulders back, chest out, head up, eyes slightly raised, shoulders relaxed, nice and loose. See in your minds eye you teeing off perfectly, seeing the ball land exactly where you want it. Then seeing yourself chipping onto the green and the ball landing 2 foot from the hole, imagine this perfectly in your mind. Then vividly see yourself putting into the hole to make par....feel how good it feels, and with a big smile on your face, breathe in and say to yourself "YES". then play this same new mental movie in your mind over once more, and this time breathe more deeply, stand a little taller, feel more confident, make the movie image brighter, crisper, more colourful and vibrant. Hear the sound as you play your perfect shots, make those sounds clear and resonant. Do this same process at least 5 times, preferably 10 times the night before your round and 5-10 times in the morning before your round.

In summary:

1. Only visualize and focus on what you want to happen. The ball going exactly were you want it to, in the hole.

2. The mind and body don't know the difference between something that really happened and something that is vividly imagined. So do this well and your mind and body will feel like you have hit 10-20 perfect holes on the 7th.

3.Be relaxed and have fun with it!

College Student says listening to Tom Bushnell's Motivational Speech helped him improve his skills and attitude

The experience of breaking a thick wooden board with your bare hands, is just a massive adrenalin rush. My experience with Tom Bushnell, was an enjoyable and great positivity booster, I carried out his routine of jumping and shouting "YES" and then forcing my hand through a thick ply of pine wood, which looked impossible to do, but NO, Tom proved that nothing is impossible if you think positively. I broke through the board with out a problem, I carried on thinking positively and through-out the year, my Rugby improved and my skills and attitude changed with me attacking every challenge positively.

Thank you for the great morale boost and experience, would love to do it again!

Student at Bedstone College, Shropshire and former pupil of Moorland School, Clitheroe.

School aged youth break through wood with bare hands

School Teacher Charlie Jackson talks about Tom's Confidence building work at Moorland School in Clitheroe, Lancs

I'd heard a BBC Radio interview of Tom Bushnell talking about how he builds confidence and motivation within people. I also watched a video clip of Tom working firsthand with a Scottish football team AFC Brightons. When I saw his board breaking methods with the footballers I thought "The kids at Moorlands school will love this"!!! I spoke with the Head (Mr Paul Smith at the time) and showed him the video. He too thought the same, we must get Tom in to go through his seminar with our pupils. So we hired Tom and his services for the day.

He came up to the school and taught the pupils and teachers his unique motivational techniques, one of which was to get them to write a goal on a piece of pine wood and then show them how to break through the wood with their bare hands! As a metaphor for whats possible. The kids absolutely loved it!

We also hired Tom to speak at our Prize giving that evening and speak before the parents. One of our female pupils volunteered to go up on stage with Tom and demonstrate what they had been learning. By now she knew how to motivate herself very quickly and she broke through her second piece of wood for that day, to show to all the parents her newly acquired confidence. It was a great evening.

In summary what Tom Bushnell taught to my kids that day was brilliant. It challenged the kids, it was ground breaking (well at least wood breaking). It was fun and enjoyable for them. He introduced a whole new area of teaching methods, that had never been taught, that could be used in any area of the students life whether academically or personally. It was a real confidence booster for them. They learnt some really great transferable skills that they can use in every area of their lives, which I believe will help them achieve even more. I would strongly recommend Tom to any school or club; and with a new set of pupils here at Moorlands we would definitely like to hire him again.
